The Parts, Maintenance, and Cleaning of Bowling Lanes

It may seem similar, but a bowling lane and a bowling alley are completely different from one another. A bowling alley, consisting of several parts, is the space used for bowling. One of those parts, probably the most important, is the bowling lane.

A bowling lane is the long plane where a bowling ball rolls towards the pins. Usually, the lane consists of long wooden boards. These boards are joined together to form a 75-foot long and 3.5-foot wide lane.

The wooden plane is very smooth. Bowling lane constructors smooth each wooden board before and after they connect them together. Afterwards, they use smoothing chemicals on the surface of the lane, and also use polishing techniques.

The bowling lane may be 75 feet long, but it is separated into two parts: the approach area and the playing lane. The approach area is the 15-foot area from the starting edge of the lane to the foul line. Bowling players use this area in taking a shot.

The playing lane is the area after the approach area, which is separated by a foul line. The foul line is 60 feet from the pins, exactly at the end of the 15-foot approach area. Stepping on or over this line during a shot is considered a foul.

The playing lane is also separated into two parts: the painted area, and the ball rolling area. The painted area is the area within 15 feet beyond the foul line. This area contains painted arrows, which indicate measurements on the lane. These painted arrows are also smoothed by floor polishing. Players drop the bowling balls in this area during each shot.

The ball rolling area is where the ball rolls towards the pins.

The bowling lane requires thorough maintenance. Any particles or disfigurements on the wood would definitely affect a player's shot. Therefore, the bowling lane must be cleaned regularly. Only trained personnel should do the cleaning because the lane is sensitive to scratches. Trained personnel wear special shoes to avoid damaging the lane. They usually use soft brooms, dry wiping material, smoothing chemicals, and polishing materials.

A bowling lane is the long plane where a bowling ball rolls towards the target pin heads. Usually, the lane consists of long wooden boards. These boards are joined together to form a lane 75 feet long and 3.5 feet wide. The wooden plane is a very smooth. Bowling lane constructors smoothen each wooden board before and after they connected them with each other. Afterwards, they place smoothening chemicals on the surface of the lane, and further smoothen it by polishing techniques. The bowling lane would have smoothened paint marks on its surface, indicating measurements.

The 75-foot bowling lane is separated into three parts: the 15-foot approach area, the 15-foot arrows area, and the 45-foot rolling area.
